There are hundreds of photography courses out there and on paper they all sound fantastic. But how do you know which one will actually help you grow? After years of teaching, I’ve learned that a truly great photography course isn’t about fancy equipment or endless theory, it’s about people, practice and feedback. Here’s what really matters when choosing where to study.
- Small class sizes
- Fun and engaging projects
- A course long enough to make a difference
- Real-world environments
- Learning from professional photographers
- Independence and confidence
- A perfect mix of theory, practice and feedback
Small class sizes
Picture this: you’re in a classroom with 20 other students, and your tutor just asked if anyone has questions. Silence. Because who’s brave enough to raise a hand in front of forty strangers? That’s why at LIoP we cap our groups at 8 students, and for studio-heavy subjects like Fashion, Portrait and Product Photography we keep it to down to 6.
It means everyone gets hands-on time, real conversation, and the chance to experiment without feeling rushed. You’ll know your tutor, and more importantly, your tutor will know you. That’s when real progress happens.
Fun and engaging projects
Photography should never feel like homework. A good course keeps things exciting with projects that stretch your imagination and skills. Whether you’re shooting a fashion series or a social documentary, you should walk away with something you’re proud to show.
At LIoP, every module ends with a final project that’s personal to you. You might shoot a still-life that looks like it belongs in a glossy magazine, or a street series that captures London’s chaos just right. It’s a chance to experiment, make mistakes, and sometimes surprise yourself with what you create. You’ll work hard, but you’ll laugh a lot too!
A course long enough to make a difference
Some workshops promise instant transformation. If you’ve ever seen a “Fashion Photography in a Day” workshop, you’ll know how I feel about shortcuts. Photography is as much muscle memory as creative thinking and learning a range of different techniques, with time for repetition and feedback.
That’s why the Professional Photography Course runs over 10 modules and 160 hours and our Short Photography Courses are between 2 and 4 days long, giving you enough time to explore, fail safely, and build real confidence. By the end, you don’t just understand how to use your camera, you understand yourself as a photographer.
Real-world environments
A good course doesn’t stay stuck in the classroom. At LIoP, we take students into professional studios, teach them how to book spaces, and even involve them in the casting process when working with model agencies. You’ll get to know the industry infrastructure: rental studios, equipment suppliers, stylists, and more.
When you see how professional shoots operate, the jump from student to photographer suddenly doesn’t feel so big. You’ll already know the ropes, and maybe a few people in the business too.
Learning from professional photographers
We think you should learn from people who do what they teach. Our tutors are all working professionals who bring their current experience straight into class. They’ve seen what it takes to thrive in commercial, editorial, and creative photography and they’ll share that with you, warts and all.
Here are a few of the people you’ll meet:
- Holger Pooten, advertising and editorial photographer, founder of LIoP
- Megan Kellythorn, portrait and fashion photographer exploring gender and identity
- Chiara Luxardo, documentary storyteller with a passion for human connection
- Karina Twiss, fashion and beauty photographer working between London and Paris
They bring real-world energy to every class, plus the kind of advice you only get from someone who’s actually dealt with an art director on two hours of sleep.
Independence and confidence
A good photography course shouldn’t make you dependent on teachers. It should give you the tools and self-belief to go out and shoot on your own. We make sure every student knows how to plan a shoot, manage clients, edit professionally and handle the practicalities of being a working photographer.
By the time you finish, you’ll have everything you need to keep creating and the confidence to do it your way.
A perfect mix of theory, practice and feedback
Some courses drown you in technical talk, others skip straight to shooting and leave you wondering why half your photos are blurred. The sweet spot is somewhere in between.
At LIoP, we blend the three — solid technical grounding, creative exploration, and personal feedback. That combination is what helps our students grow faster, develop a strong signature style, and eventually build portfolios that open doors in the professional world.
