Photography is best learned from those who live it every day. At the London Institute of Photography, all our tutors are active professionals — shooting, editing and creating for real clients and publications. Here’s why learning directly from working photographers can transform the way you develop your skills and build your career.

  • Learn from those who live it: why being taught by working photographers matters
  • Techniques and workflows that actually work: insights only professionals can share
  • Avoiding years of trial and error: how to skip common beginner mistakes
  • A direct connection to the industry: how real-world exposure builds confidence
  • Different perspectives, one shared goal: learning from varied specialisations
  • Learning that leads to independence: turning knowledge into a sustainable practice

Learn from those who live it

When you’re serious about photography, it makes sense to learn from people who actually make a living from it. Every one of our tutors at the London Institute of Photography is an active working photographer. They bring their experience from commercial shoots, editorial commissions and personal projects straight into the classroom.

That means what you learn isn’t abstract — it’s exactly how things work out there in the real world. You’ll hear about the challenges, the quick fixes, the creative decisions, and even the occasional disaster story that helped them grow. It’s those insights that make all the difference when you start building your own photography career.

Techniques and workflows that actually work

Photography is a craft, and every professional has spent years developing methods that work reliably under pressure — whether that’s lighting a product perfectly or managing a team on location.
At LIoP, our tutors share the shortcuts, tricks, and tested techniques that they’ve refined through experience. You’ll learn how to set up lighting efficiently, how to work with assistants and models, and how to keep a shoot running smoothly even when things don’t go as planned.

In other words, you don’t just learn how to take great pictures — you learn how to work like a professional.

Avoiding years of trial and error

Many photographers spend years trying to figure things out on their own: which equipment really matters, how to price jobs, how to present a portfolio, or how to communicate with clients.
By learning from working professionals, you skip much of that slow trial and error. Our tutors know what’s worth investing in and what’s not. They’ve made the mistakes already — so you don’t have to.

It’s not only a time saver, it’s a financial one too. Getting the right advice early on helps you avoid costly detours and focus on what genuinely moves your photography forward.

A direct connection to the industry

Because our tutors are actively working, they introduce students to the real structure of the photography world — from rental studios and equipment suppliers to stylists, model agencies and art directors. You start building a mental map of how the industry fits together and how professionals collaborate.

For example, students in our Portrait and Fashion Photography Courses take part in the full casting process when working with model agencies and shoot in professional rental studios. These experiences make the transition from learning to working feel natural and achievable.

Different perspectives, one shared goal

Each of our tutors brings a different background:

  • Holger Pooten — Advertising-editorial photographer and founder of LIoP
  • Megan Kellythorn — London-based portrait and fashion photographer exploring gender themes
  • Chiara Luxardo — Documentary photographer and visual storyteller focused on identity
  • Caterina Nasini —Intuitive documentary photographer finding beauty in everyday life
  • Noemi Scavo — London-based lifestyle, travel and food photographer
  • Ben Smith — Multi-hyphenate photographer, educator and media creator
  • Karina Twiss — London/Paris-based beauty and fashion photographer-director

Together they represent a cross-section of today’s professional photography world — and their combined experience helps our students discover which direction excites them most.

Learning that leads to independence

Ultimately, our goal isn’t to make you dependent on instruction — it’s to give you the skills and confidence to create on your own. Learning from professionals shows you how projects are built from concept to final image, so you can replicate that process outside the classroom.

That’s why so many of our Professional Photography Course graduates go on to launch careers, assist top photographers, or establish their own visual brands. It all starts with learning from people who’ve already walked that path.
