Street and Documentary Photography Course

Capturing the emotions of the street and documenting life are two of the most powerful forms of photography. In this comprehensive course you will learn to craft captivating visual stories, utilise light and location to create impactful images that capture the spontaneity of street life and the depth of documentary work.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of London, you will delve into the art of telling stories through images through hands-on assignments and feedback from an award-winning photographer.

What is the course about?

In this hands-on course, you’ll learn to capture the raw energy of street photography as well as the narrative depth of documentary practice. The course covers the history of street and documentary photography, contemporary practices, and the works of influential photographers. Over the course of 4 days you’ll work on a series of assignment and receive invaluable feedback from an award-winning photographer while mastering the creative and technical aspects of photo essays, including establishing shots, portrait, detail shots, the decisive moment and relationship shots.

We’ll explore quick and easy techniques to improve your photography and develop your photographic style and confidence. Each day focuses on a different aspect of street & documentary photography and how to use light and location to create impactful, resonant images.

By developing and shooting your own photo project on the last day, you’ll learn to communicate stories effectively and understand the cultural and legal scope of your work. Back at our studio, you will learn to edit your images to create coherence narrative.

  • Choosing lenses & other equipment, and optimising camera set-ups

  • Editing your images to form a coherent series

What skills will I acquire?

  • Tell stories through images, by learning how to create & structure your photo story or essay

  • Consider the framework of your story or essay, from an historical, contextual & conceptual perspective

  • Capture the spontaneity of street life in your own artistic style

  • Edit your images to create coherence

  • Have an understanding of the cultural and legal scope of your work

What do I need?

Digital Camera (DSLR or Mirrorless) with Manual Exposure Mode, laptop with Adobe Lightroom Classic (can be a free trial)

If you don’t own your own digital camera, you can hire a professional grade DSLR (Canon or Nikon) from us for £20/day. Simply email us with your requirements.
