It might sound a little cheeky for a photography school to write about what makes a great photography school, but who better to know? After all, years of teaching have shown us what photographers really need to thrive. The truth is, choosing where to study photography can shape not just your skills, but the way you see the world.

So, sit back and let’s talk about what really makes a photography school great — and yes, why the London Institute of Photography (LIoP) happens to tick all those boxes.

  • Learn from professionals who live the craft
  • Small classes that make a big difference
  • Mentoring and feedback
  • Real-world results that prove it works
  • A course structure built around creativity and careers
  • A community that keeps supporting you long after graduation
  • But don’t just take our word for it

Learn from professionals who live the craft

If you’re learning to swim, you’d want a teacher who’s been in the deep end, right? Photography’s no different. Great photography schools are built on tutors who actually do the job, not just talk about it.

At LIoP, every tutor is an active working photographer. That means they bring real-life experience straight into the classroom — from creative briefs and client shoots to the unpredictable chaos of a day on set. You learn the techniques that professionals use, the shortcuts they rely on, and the mistakes they’ve already made, so you don’t have to repeat them.

Our teaching team includes photographers like Holger Pooten, advertising and editorial specialist and LIoP founder, Chiara Luxardo, documentary storyteller with a focus on identity, and Karina Twiss, a London and Paris-based fashion and beauty photographer.

Small classes that make a big difference

We like to keep things human-sized. That’s why our class numbers are small — usually no more than 8 students, and even fewer in hands-on studio courses.

In a small group, you can ask questions, get immediate feedback, and actually get to know your tutor, you’re working side by side with people with years of experience in their fields who share your goals . That’s when learning really clicks.

Mentoring and feedback

Here’s a secret: feedback is where the real learning happens. A good mentor won’t just say “nice shot” and move on; they’ll help you see what’s working and what isn’t, and more importantly, why.

Every student on our Professional Photography Course flagship course gets five one-to-one mentoring sessions with a the head of the school, a seasoned advertising photographer. These sessions are where big progress happens — when students realise their strengths, challenge their habits, and start to develop a recognisable style.

Mentoring at LIoP isn’t about telling you what kind of photographer you should be. It’s about asking the right questions so you discover it for yourself. And yes, we’ll push you a bit 🙂

Real-world results that prove it works

Talk is cheap. Results are better.

Our alumni have gone on to exhibit at Free Range London, assist internationally recognised photographers, and win major awards including the Portrait of Britain and the AOP Emerging Artist Award as well as being represented by the best agencies in the world like CLM.

What makes us proud isn’t just the accolades — it’s seeing our graduates carve out careers that fit their style and ambitions. Whether they’re freelancing, shooting campaigns, or creating personal art projects, they’re doing it with confidence and a clear creative identity.

We know this because they often pop back into the studio for a chat, still armed with new work.

A course structure built around creativity and careers

A great photography school doesn’t just teach technique; it teaches independence.

Our Professional Photography Course is designed to give students both — 10 modules plus  5 mentoring sessions that combine technical mastery, creative exploration, and professional preparation. You’ll cover everything from studio lighting and portrait photography to branding, editing, and business skills.

By the time you finish, you’ll have a strong printed portfolio, a professional website, and a solid understanding of how to make a living doing what you love. It’s the kind of practical, career-focused approach that makes LIoP a better alternative to a traditional university degree — less theory, more action.

A community that keeps supporting you long after your course has finished

At LIoP, graduation isn’t goodbye. We stay in touch with our alumni, and they stay in touch with each other. The network of past students is one of the most valuable parts of our school — people share opportunities, collaborate on projects, and keep learning together.

We also host exhibitions, talks and portfolio reviews, giving students and graduates the chance to keep showing their work and meeting new industry contacts. Once you’re part of LIoP, you’re part of a creative community that keeps growing with you.

Besides, we like seeing how everyone’s doing — it’s hard not to be a bit proud when former students pop up in publications, galleries, and award shortlists.

But don’t just take our word for it

We admit it, it’s a bit funny writing an article about what makes a great photography school and then concluding that it’s us. So, don’t take our word for it — take our students’. They’ve shared their experiences, stories and honest opinions over on Trustpilot. We think their words say even more about who we are than any marketing ever could.
